5 mistakes that dull your knives
Oct 12, 2026
These everyday habits quietly ruin a sharp edge. Here's what to stop, and what to do instead:
1. Cutting on glass or stone boards: they're harder than steel and flatten the edge fast. Use wood or plastic.
2. Knives in the dishwasher: rattling around dulls and chips the blade. Hand wash and dry right away.
3. Scraping food off the board with the sharp edge: it bends the edge over. Flip the knife and use the spine.
4. Tossing knives loose in a drawer: they knock together and nick the edge. Use a block, a magnetic strip, or blade guards.
5. Never honing: a honing steel doesn't sharpen, it straightens the edge. A few quick strokes keep it sharp much longer.
